Dorothy Willits Hallowell Nursing Scholarship
The
Foundation furthers its mission by supporting
the social ministry of Friends in the community
through preparation of health care professionals
who embrace Quaker values. Toward that end, the
Foundation is making scholarship money available
to high school seniors who wish to pursue the
profession of nursing and have been accepted
into an institution of higher education that
offers an approved program of study in
professional nursing. The scholarship is named
after
Dorothy Willets Hallowell, a long time resident
of the Jeanes Hospital community and supporter
of Jeanes Hospital.
Scholarship
Qualifications and Requirements
To be eligible for this scholarship the student
must be a:
- Quaker enrolled in a Society of the Friend’s High School
- Quaker enrolled in a non-Friend’s high school
- Non Quaker enrolled in a Society of Friend’s high school
All applicants must be residents of the Delaware Valley. A preference will be given to those who live within the community served by the Jeanes’ Hospital.
The student must have a high school GPA of
3.0 or better and have a letter of acceptance
into an institution of higher education that
includes a program of study toward professional
nursing.
Award amounts
1st and 2nd years (prerequisite
course work):
$1,250 per semester (not to exceed $5,000
total). During the first and second year, it is
expected that the student will complete
pre-nursing course prerequisites.
3rd and 4th years (nursing course work):
$5,000 per semester (not to exceed $20,000). The student must be enrolled in nursing course work in an NLN or AACN approved BSN, ADN, or diploma program of study toward professional nursing.
The scholarship will be automatically renewable if the student maintains a minimum grade point average GPA of 2.85 or equivalent and is successfully matriculated into a nursing program. The money can be used for tuition, fees and other expenses related to attending an institution of higher education.
The Scholarship
Application process requires
- Completed application form;
- Copy of a letter of acceptance to a
college or institution of higher education
that offers an approved program of study
toward nursing;
- Two letters of reference;
- A copy of your official high school
transcript;
- Completion of a 300-400 word essay
stating your reasons for pursuing a career
in nursing.
Award Process
Interested students must complete the application form, forward copies of their letter of acceptance and high school transcript as well as two letters of recommendation and submit the package to the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee by mail, addressed to:

Incomplete submissions will not be considered. The Foundations Scholarship Committee, which is composed of members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors and the Chief Nursing Officer of Jeanes Hospital will qualify the applications and select finalists for further consideration. Finalists are interviewed by the committee, either in person or by phone. The Committee recommendations are approved by the Foundation’s Board of Directors at its regular Second Quarter meeting.
